About Rohtas Fort
Rohtas Fort, located near Jhelum in Punjab, Pakistan, stands as a monumental piece of Mughal military architecture. Built in the 16th century by the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri, this massive fort was constructed to protect his empire from the advancing Mughal forces. The fort’s strategic location on a hilltop provided an ideal defense against invaders and also controlled the important route between Peshawar and Lahore.
Spanning an area of about 4 kilometers, Rohtas Fort boasts 12 majestic gates, each a unique blend of Afghan and Persian architectural styles. Its robust stone walls, over 18 meters high, are adorned with intricate carvings, balconies, and battlements, offering a glimpse into the advanced engineering techniques of its time. The Sohail Gate and Rani Mahal, in particular, are highlights, showcasing a mix of elegance and military might.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Rohtas Fort has remained remarkably intact despite the passage of centuries. The fort not only served as a stronghold but also as a symbol of Sher Shah Suri's military genius. Today, it attracts history enthusiasts, architects, and tourists from all over the world, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in South Asian history.
